Revision Date: 2016-09-07

Lab 1 – Introduction to VM Ware

In this lab you will begin to establish the working environment that you will utilize for the semester. Using VM Ware 10, you will set up two Virtual Machines on the Dell system. One VM will hold Server 2012 R2, the other will support Win 10. Creating two operating systems besides the host system will allow you to complete all lab assignments individually.

In today’s lab you will familiarize yourself with VM Ware Workstation while creating the first of two Virtual Machines. The first VM will support Server 2012 R2.

Note that VM Ware can be installed on a laptop instead of an external drive. To do so, ask your instructor for the link to the software. You will also have to obtain a key. Continue with these instructions after installing VM Ware. Some steps may be skipped as they apply to Dell workstation usage only.

Part 1 – Working with VM Ware Workstation

1.Boot up your Dell workstation.
2.Log in using mit403 as both the username and password.
3.Ensure your USB External Hard Drive is functioning and visible under My Computer.
4.Navigate to and open VMware workstation and select Create a New Virtual Machine.

Note: If this is a new installation of VM Ware, select the radio button to agree to the licensing. Obtain your license key and select Step 2 – Enter License Key on the evaluation screen (You do not have to enter a key at this point leave this blank). Then select New - Virtual Machine.

5.A window opens welcoming you to the New Virtual Machine Wizard.

6.Select Typical and then click on Next.

7.The Guest Operating System dialog appears where you will specify the location of the source files (CD) of the Operating System to be added. Select the Installer disk image file (iso): and browse to the desktop or the location of the ISO file you copied from the server. Select the ISO file once the file has been recognized, press Next.

BEFORE AFTER

8.You will then be prompted to enter the CD key. Select the version of Windows to install and provide a user name. You may also continue without entering a key. You will have 30 days to do so before Server 2012 stops working.

Select Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter from the drop down list and enter Administrator for the full name. Leave the password blank at this time.

Select Next.

9.
A new dialog window asking you to name your virtual machine will now appear. Verify that the Virtual machine name is Windows Server 2012 R2 x64.

Go to your desktop and create a new folder named MIT403, within the folder, create another folder named Server2012.

Go back to VMware and Select the Server2012 folder you have just created. This is where the virtual machine settings and files will be saved. (At the end of this lab, transfer the MIT403 folder to your external hard drive so you will have your own server to work with) Press Next.

10.The wizard asks you to Specify Disk Capacity used by the guest system you are about to install. Use the default of 60GB and select Store Virtual disk as a single file.

BEFORE AFTER

11.
The Ready to Create Virtual Machine window will appear with the settings for the machine. Press Finish to start the install. If any prompts appear that specify other devices press OK to remove the window. If any software upgrades are displayed, bypass the upgrade for now.
