MECH4880 REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING

ASSIGNMENT 1 (2024) – Part A and B Overview (Ver 1)

1.       Problem Statement

A client has commissioned your company to conduct a heat load analysis and design the HVAC system for a 2-storey shopping centre, as described in the attached project specifications and drawings. Your manager has tasked you with calculating the cooling and heating loads and performing preliminary duct design and unit selection for a section of the building with the aid of preliminary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.

This assignment is divided into two parts: Part A and Part B. To submit a subsequent part, students must have  already  submitted  all  previous  parts.  When  submitting  Part  B,  combining  it  with  Part  A  is unnecessary, but keeping a copy of the combined document yourself is highly recommended. This combined document (A-B) will be valuable for presenting your experience from the coursework to the industry, such as in future job interviews.

A professional report should be submitted for every part. The report shall include an executive summary  (with  a  tabulated  summary  of  results),  introduction  and  conclusion.  Figures  and  tables  shall  be  appropriately captioned. A consistent referencing system shall be used throughout (e.g., IEEE or Harvard). The report shall include a contents page, a list of figures and a list of tables. The body of the report should  be organised in a logical and coherent fashion. The helper document provides a useful guideline for  organising the body of the report; the headings/order should be followed but maybe adjusted, and the list  is not exhaustive. Writing  should be concise and to the point, avoiding  superfluous information or  repetition of content. The report should be formatted neatly to allow information to be conveniently  extracted. Each part of the assignment will have a maximum limit of 25 pages, not including appendices.

However, you should assume that the marker will not mark anything in the appendices. The following documents should be used in conjunction with this overview:

•    Assignment 1 – Building Layout

•    Assignment 1 – Project Specifications

•    Assignment 1 – Preliminary CFD analysis results

•    Assignment 1 – Assignment Helper

Part A Due by Week 7, Friday 25th  of October

Section A1

This section requires students to implement the heat load calculation methodology outlined in AIRAH- DA09. A detailed manual heat load calculations for the Gym (Planet Gym) must be performed and reported for summer and winter. Reporting must include (but not limited to) the following items:

(1)        Design Day Selection and Specification Comprehension

(2)        External Loads Wall Specifications

(3)        External Loads Solar Transmission

(4)        External Loads Partitions

(5)        External Loads Winter

(6)        Internal Loads Summer

(7)        Internal Loads Winter

(8)        Cooling and Heating Load Summary

(9)        Psychrometrics (Summer only)

Section A2

This part requires students to compare their hand calculations for the Gym with the cooling and heating  load simulation produced by CAMEL software. (Note: the results for the CAMEL simulation are provided. Students are not expected to complete the simulation on CAMEL but to discuss the results).

Ensure that you follow the assignment helper as it details the minimum that is expected from each submission.

Part B Due by Week 10, Friday 15th  of November

Section B1

This part requires students to determine the layout and function of each part within the whole shopping centre. A detailed calculation of the heating and cooling load is not required. Instead, the submission should include (but not limited to) the following elements:

(1)       Produce conditioned/ventilated space maps

(2)       Prepare a design brief, identifying the key factors to consider for each part of the shopping centre in terms of HVAC designs

(3)       Calculate for ventilated space requirements

Section B2

This part requires students to further build upon  the previous part by conducting pressure  loss calculations on duct runs to determine required fan parameters. Other equipment, such as AHUs, will also be selected before concluding the report with sustainable design considerations with preliminary CFD case studies. The submission should include (but not limited to) the following elements:

(1)       Air schematics

(2)       Duct Design

(3)       Pressure loss calculations (Ventilated spaces only)

(4)       AHU selection

(5)       Building improvements and sustainable design based on provided preliminary CFD case studies

Ensure that you follow the assignment helper as it details the minimum that is expected from each submission.
