Final Visualization
The final visualization is an individual assignment, where you will be asked to construct a single visualization, telling a story about a problem that is relevant to you personally. This could be a story that is drawn from your work experiences, or from your personal life, or is just something you find fascinating – I would like to see a story you think others should know.
Visualization requirements
For your final visualization, you will need to submit three components: the visualization, the code and data used to generate it, and a brief writeup. The visualization itself should stand alone, containing all the information necessary for the audience to understand it. It should fit onto a single 8.5x11 piece of paper. The code and data must be included, with sufficient documentation to allow me to replicate the visualization. If you have done additional post work on the visualization in other software (e.g. Illustrator), this should be noted in the code.
The writeup should be brief (maximum of one page), starting by describing why you selected this problem, what is important and interesting about it. It should discuss the source of the data and the analysis that was done. Last, it should lay out the story that is being told, closing with what you want the viewer to walk away with. However, please note that this is an accompaniment to the visualization, which should stand alone and not require the writeup to be understood.
You will be graded on the technical and aesthetic quality of the visualization, its ability to effectively tell a story and to capture the audience’s interest. I will also consider the topic of the visualization as part of my evaluation.
