Aim

The assignment aims to help you:

1.   Develop your research, analytical, and writing skills.

2.   Learn how to reflect critically on the sources of the information you use in your research.

3.   Appreciate how to use artificial intelligence appropriately; i.e. as a tool to help you with your research, not as a substitute for undertaking your own research.

These skills are important graduate attributes sought by leading employers. You will need to become adept at finding relevant resources and then organising your thoughts and presenting them in a coherent and convincing way; i.e. you must make use of economic concepts, theories, models and diagrams.

To do this assignment, you will need to access the Microsoft Bing Copilot, https://www.bing.com/chat,   or   ChatGPT   AI    model   which    is   available    for   free    from   the    OpenAI   website   here    … https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/.

Essay Topic: (enter the following statement into Copilot or ChatGPT to start your conversation).

In the post-Covid and high interest rates context in Australia, explain the potential impact of stage 3 tax cuts. 

Assignment Requirements

You will be required to submit two (2) separate files via Canvas:

1.   (18 marks) A complete copy of the Copilot or ChatGPT conversation responding to the essay topic below.

a.   Your aim is to engage Copilot or ChatGPT in conversation on the essay topic above to try and get it to give you the most accurate possible response that it can.

b.   First enter the following statement exactly as stated below into Copilot or ChatGPT. This will start your conversation with Copilot or ChatGPT.

In the post-Covid and high interest rates context in Australia, explain the potential impact of stage 3 tax cuts. 

c.    Once you have received Copilot or ChatGPT’s initial answer, ask as many follow-up questions as you think necessary to get Copilot or ChatGPT to improve on, and provide more detail to, its original response.

2.   (32 marks) A maximum TWO page (A4, 12-point Times New Roman font) critique of the ChatGPT answers (from part 1 above) including:

a.   Discussing how the Copilot or ChatGPT responses to the essay topic below could be further improved.

b.   Providing extra explanation and analysis of the Copilot or ChatGPT responses using relevant  theories,   diagrams,  equations,  statistics  and  other  references  (including lectures) to help clarify/improve/correct Copilot or ChatGPT’s response to the essay topic below.

Due Dates:

•    You will submit both parts of your assignment by Saturday 11 May 11pm (Sydney time).

Marking Criteria for part 1 of the assignment:

•    How relevant and useful are the follow-up questions you ask Copilot or ChatGPT to get it to improve on its initial response to the essay topic above?

•    How thoroughly do you question Copilot or ChatGPT’s initial answer in order to try and get it to provide the best possible response to the essay topic above?

•    How  closely  are  your  questions to Copilot  or  ChatGPT  grounded in the  economic theories/models discussed in class?

Marking Criteria for part 2 of the assignment: your critique should be:

•    Logically developed, thorough and coherent

•    Be well-grounded in the economic theories/models discussed in class and the textbook.

•    Be directly related to the responses provided by Copilot or ChatGPT in your conversation from part 1.

•    Be relevant to the essay topic specified above.

•    Be well-written; clear, succinct, persuasive and relevant.

•    Make use, where relevant, of the tools an economist uses to make an argument clearly (e.g. diagrams, equations, references, statistical and other evidence to support statements and conclusions).

-   The textbook and other relevant course readings, check references in the slides and in the Canvas pages.
