Numeracy Project
The goal of the numeracy project is to apply mathematical concepts in the real world. Please explore something,
some question, that you’ve always been curious about. You may also conduct a study at your internship site or place
of employment. These often make the best projects. Try to do something that is REAL for you, which rises out of a
hobby or other life interest rather than something just to take care of your class requirement.
Your project must contain two components:
1. Project Proposal First you must write a project proposal. The project proposal must be 1 page or less,
Times New Roman Font, 12 pt, 1” margins and double spaced. The proposal is just to help clarify for
yourself and for me exactly what you are planning to study, and your methodology. Your project proposal
must follow this format:
a. Paragraph One
i. What is your project?
ii. What is the main question that you are trying to answer?
iii. Why is it important?
b. Paragraph Two
i. Background information
ii. Why does it matter?
iii. Is it job related?
iv. What follow up will you do with the results of your investigation
c. Paragraph Three
i. What is the methodology for your project/investigation.
1. Please systematically list all of the steps that you will take to complete your
investigation.
2. What is the timeline for completion
ii. What experimental error might you have?
d. Paragraph Four
i. What will you show in your ppt presentation? In part 2 below, I give you the guidelines
for what must be in the ppt. But you should tell me specifically how you will meet those
requirements. For example, instead of saying you will make a graph of the information,
say that you will make a bar graph, x axis values are in what units, at what scale and y
axis what units at what scale.
e. Paragraph Five
i. What evidence will you show that you have completed the work you are presenting; this
could include photos of the project, copies of spreadsheets (with sensitive info deleted, if
necessary), or other document.
2. Power Point Presentation The second component is a Power Point Presentation of 5-10 minutes. This
presentation must include visual evidence of your project-- photographs, spreadsheets or other documents etc. It
must include these components:
a. What is the question you set out to explore? Please state your hypothesis quantifiably (for
example, rather than hypothesizing: More people would do X, say something like: Twice as
many people will do X
b. What methodology did you use to attempt to prove this hypothesis?
c. The study itself: Please provide visual evidence that you completed your project. This should
include:
a. Photographs of where/how you gathered your data.
b. Evidence of your method of documentation of evidence (tally sheets, photos, etc)
c. Raw data in tabular form.
d. Graphs/charts etc which demonstrate how you analyzed the data
d. Conclusion you drew from your study.
e. Any experimental error
a. If you could redo your study, what would you change to improve your accuracy, or,
b. Did you discover through the course of your study that as you did it, something about
your methodology invalidated your result?
