Assessment 1 Overview
This assessment focuses designing a speech-based interaction using storyboards, personas, and design fiction. This assessment is worth 20% of your overall mark.
Preparation
For this assessment, you must develop a concept for an interactive system that uses speech-based interaction. For example, Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri are examples of speech-based interfaces for interacting with smart assistants. Your design and evaluation project can use any interaction context as long as all inputs and outputs are achieved using speech (human spoken speech, pre-recorded speech, or machine generate speech).
Begin this assessment by considering an interactive interface that would be improved by using speech-based interaction. It is important you have a good motivation for why speech-based interaction will improve this interface. Consider objects you interact with every day such as websites, mobile devices, wearable devices, and ubiquitous interfaces. Identify a current challenge, limitation, or frustration that could be addressed using speech.
Formative Assessment
The formative assessment requires you to create personas (2) and scenarios (2) of your proposed interaction. For each persona, create a scenario describing how they will interact with your proposed concept. In small groups, you will be asked to present your concept in a 2 minute pitch and share your personas and scenarios for feedback from the group.
This must be completed in time for the lab on 18/2. You will present your pitch and discuss your proposed interaction concept during that lab session. This will not be formally assessed but your revised personas and scenarios will be part of your summative assessment.

Summative Assessment
Your summative assessment brings together your personas and scenarios into a final report and video. This will be assessed for 20% of your overall mark in this course.
Design Pitch Report
The report template gives the required structure for your submission. After revising your formative assessment and responding to feedback from the lab session, choose one persona and scenario to focus on in your report.
Design Fiction Video
You must create a video design fiction demonstrating your chosen persona and scenario. As a design fiction, this does not require any implementation, but you may need to be creative to gather the resources needed to create the fiction. For example, you may need to pre-record the interface’s speech responses to play while your perform and record the interaction. You may need to create suitable environments to set the scene for your recording. Here are some suggestions for how you might go about creating your fiction:
Live recording: Setup a staging area where you can film your interaction. Perform the scripted actions while triggering interface responses as a live performance. Audio assets must be gathered in advance and triggered while you record the performance.
Virtual recording: Using a virtual environment like Mozilla Hubs, setup a virtual environment as needed for your scenario. Use a screen recording to capture performance and responses of how your interaction would unfold in a virtual environment. Audio, avatar, and environment assets must be gathered in advance and triggered while you record the performance.
Animation: Use an IDE like Unity to setup a timeline and animation where your interaction unfolds as an animation. Audio, avatar, and environment assets must be gathered in advance and configured into an animation timeline.
You can create this design fiction artefact using any tools of your choice, including video recording, simple animations, screen captures, or any other video artefacts. You can appear in the video yourself or another person to be in your recording. You may find the text to speech capabilities of both Windows and Mac devices useful in creating audio resources. There are also many text to speech applications available online.
The video must be no longer than 5 minutes in length and clearly demonstrate your persona and scenario as a design fiction. Ensure you keep this in mind while developing and finalising your personas and scenarios.
Submission
You must submit your report in the template and the video file in the Moodle submission box. The deadline is 23rd March at 16:30. Late penalties will be applied in line with school late submission policies. All work with will checked with plagiarism detection software.

The analysis is good, with a generally clear reflection on key issues. The design fiction video is good, with a generally consistent use of visual and audio to portray narrative.
Fair
(C1-C3) The personas and scenarios are fair, with some weaknesses and lack of details. The design fiction concept is fair, with some weaknesses or vague motivations. The analysis is fair, with limited reflection or shallow discussion. The design fiction video is fair, with an inconsistent or poorly constructed use of audio and visual.
Inadequate
(D1-G2) The personas and scenarios are inadequate with clear flaws. The design fiction concept is inadequate, with confused or incomplete elements. The analysis is inadequate, with confusing structure or lack of detail. The design fiction video is inadequate, with clear flaws and poorly structured content.
