STT 215 – Design of Experiments Homework 5
1. (20 Points)
Chapter 3 Problem 3.31 (Use JMP to solve this problem)
An article in the Journal of the Electrochemical Society (Vol. 139, No. 2, 1992, pp. 524-532) describes an experiment to investigate low-pressure vapor deposition of polysilicon. The experiment was carried out in a large capacity reactor at Sematech in Austin, Texas. The reactor has several wafer positions, and four of these positions are selected at random. The response variable is film thickness uniformity. Three replicates of the experiment were run, and the data are as follows:
Wafer Positions
4.49 2.19 1.47 1.65
(a) Is there a difference in the wafer positions? Use Use α=0.05.
(b) Estimate the variability due to wafer position.
(c) Estimate the random error component using the method of moments procedure. (d) Estimate the random error component using the REML method
(e) Analyze the residuals from this experiment and comment on model adequacy.
Uniformity
1 2.76 5.67
2 1.43 1.70
3 2.34 1.97
4 0.94 1.36

Chapter 4 Problem 4.12S (Use JMP to solve this problem)
A consumer products company relies on direct mail marketing pieces as a major component of its advertising campaigns. The company has three different designs for a new brochure and want to evaluate their effectiveness, as there are substantial differences in costs between the three designs. The company decides to test the three designs by mailing 5,000 samples of each to potential customers in four different regions of the country. Since there are known regional differences in the customer base, regions are considered as blocks. The number of responses to each mailing is shown below.

Chapter 4 Problem 4.8 (Use JMP to solve this problem)
Three different washing solutions are being compared to study their effectiveness in retarding bacteria growth in five-gallon milk containers. The analysis is done in a laboratory, and only three trials can be run on any day. Because days could represent a potential source of variability, the experimenter decides to use a randomized block design. Observations are taken for four days, and the data are shown here. Analyze the data from this experiment (use α = 0.05) and draw conclusions. Treat Days as a random variable.

2 16 24 17 44
