MGMT101 Assignment 2: Comprehensive Analysis
Due Date: 4pm Friday 31 May 2024.
Weight: 30% of your overall mark for MGMT101
Length: No fewer than 1,500 words, no more than 1,750 words
(note: we will not mark any text beyond the word limit)
Purpose:
One of the most important skills you will learn at university is the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly. That skill will be the basis for success in your career. Even in fields with very technical, specialist skills, if you can’t communicate what you know to others, you won’t be able to make the most of your skills.
This assignment allows you to practice and improve your ability to communicate complex ideas in writing. We will use material from the second half of MGMT101 to practice with. That also allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of the course.
Skills that we want you to practice:
· Communicating complex ideas in writing: your answers should be clear, convincing. well-written, and easy to follow.
· Supporting your answers with evidence: research your organisation using well-chosen sources.
· Creative and critical thinking: we want to see that you’ve given the assignment some thought. Look for connections between ideas, question assumptions – show us your unique insights.
Knowledge that we want you to demonstrate:
· Knowledge of course material (weeks 6-12).
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1 – Answer the following questions.
Imagine you have the opportunity to teach your future boss about Management and what we’ve learnt in Management 101 in weeks 6-12.
Question 1: Pick 2-3 CTFs you would teach your manager about and why? You should explain the CTFs in your own words, and how it can be used in organisations and why they might find it valuable for the way they run their organisation.
Question 2: Pick 2-3 CTFs you wouldn’t teach them about and why?
Step 2 – Write your 2 answers.
Prepare written answers to the following questions. Each answer should be no fewer than 750 and no more than 825 words in length.
Tip: You may not be able to fit all your ideas into the word count. Try to prioritise the most important ones. Keep it clear and concise!
Step 3 – Submit your assignment.
Submit your answers as a single Word document or PDF using the Assignment 2 submission link on Nuku before the due date.

CREATIVITY (15%) – To what extent does your analysis demonstrate an understanding of the CTFs, as well as offering a critical perspective on the CTFs.
RESEARCH (15%) – To what extent is your analysis supported by evidence.
PRESENTATION (10%) – To what extent is your assignment written clearly, referenced appropriately, and consistent with the formatting guidelines?
FORMATTING DOs & DON’Ts
DO
|
DON’T
|
· Clearly indicate the beginning of each of your answers (e.g., use headings with Question 1, Question 2)
· Use paragraphs, and clearly indicate where each paragraph begins and ends (e.g., by inserting a double space between paragraphs)
· Cite and reference all sources using American Psychological Association (APA) formatting. There’s help on Nuku and the Library website for how to do that.
· Include a cover page that lists the title of the assignment, and your name and student ID number
· Use a clear, simple font (e.g,. Times New Roman, Calibri) in size 12. Consider using double-spaced lines – it makes your assignment easier for the markers to read.
|
· Write more than 750 words per question
· Use bullet points in your writing (they’re allowed in diagrams or tables)
|
ADDITIONAL DETAILS & TIPS
· Using first-person prose is perfectly acceptable but be deliberate about when you use it. For example, if you’re describing what you’re going to argue in your report, saying “I will argue that…” makes sense – because it’s you who will be making the arguments. In contrast, if you’re making a factual claim, starting with “I think that…” won’t sound very convincing! Instead, phrase the claim as a statement of fact and cite a source that supports it (e.g., “According to Newshub, Allbirds increased production capacity by 30% in 2021”).
· Your assignment should be written in clear, simple language that a broad audience can understand, so ensure that you:
o Avoid using complex words/phrasing just because they “sound good/fancy”
o Avoid overly long sentences
o Keep your paragraphs concise and focused on one key idea or argument
o Write in active rather than passive voice as much as possible (see https://writing.wisc.edu/handbook/style/ccs_activevoice/)
LATE SUBMISSIONS
If you haven’t submitted your assignment by the deadline, you can still submit it up to 1 week after the deadline has passed, but for each day that your assignment is late, your eventual mark will be reduced by 5% of the marks available.
Example: If you submit your assignment 2 days late, and you receive a mark of 20/30, this mark will be reduced by 10% of the marks available (i.e., 10% of 30, or 3 marks) to 17/30.
Your assignment is 1 day late as soon as the deadline has passed (i.e., at 4.01pm Thursday 6 April), 2 days late 24 hours after that (i.e., at 4.01pm Friday 7 April), and so on.
EXTENSIONS
There are two types of extension you can apply for in this course:
1) A “no questions asked”, 24-hour extension
2) A longer extension beyond 24-hours – This is for more serious issues, such as illness, bereavement, accidents etc.
To apply for either of these extensions, complete the online MGMT101 Extension Request Form
Requests for extensions must be made before the assignment deadline – only in very exceptional circumstances will an extension be granted after the deadline has passed.
Assignment 1 Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is/is not included in the official word count?
The following ARE included in the official word count for this assignment:
· Section headings
· In-text citations
· Diagram labels
· Text that appears within diagrams/tables
The following are NOT included in the official word count for this assignment:
· Any text that appears on the cover/title page
· Reference list at the end of the report
Q2. How do I know what concepts/theories/frameworks to use for which questions?
Part of the challenge of this assignment is learning to identify when a particular concept/theory/framework is appropriate to use – and when it isn’t. This means that you need to use your own judgment to decide which concepts/theories/frameworks are appropriate for each of the questions. To be clear, myself and your tutors do NOT have a preconceived expectation that students will use certain concepts/theories/frameworks to answer certain questions – it’s up to you to explain to us why the concept/theory/framework you’ve chosen is suited to answering the question you’re focusing on.
Q3. Can I use the same concept/theory/framework to answer more than one question?
Using the same concept/theory/framework more than once in your report is NOT recommended. You want to show us that you have a broad knowledge of the course content, and recycling the same ideas will make this more difficult for you.
Q4. Should we reference the source of the concepts/theories/frameworks we use in our report?
Yes – whenever you introduce a concept/theory/framework in the main body of your report, you should cite the source you learned it from (e.g., textbook, lecture slides).
Q5. How can I know if I’m citing/referencing other sources correctly?
There is a huge amount of guidance online about how to use the APA referencing format correctly. Google is your friend! The library can also help https://libguides.victoria.ac.nz/referencing-citing
