Assessment Task 4: Final Thesis

Due time and date: 17:00, Sunday, 04 August 2024

Method of submission

Softcopy only, submit a PDF version of your Assessment Task 4 under the Moodle’s ‘Assessments ’ section. After submitting in  Moodle, always check what you have submitted. Do not email your assignment to the course coordinator or your demonstrator. 

Weight of Assessment Task 2: 50 Marks

Late submission penalty

Submit before due date since late submissions will receive a 5% deduction penalty per day. Late submissions up to 5 days late will be marked and will receive the appropriate penalty deductions. Any submissions made that are more than 5 days late will not be accepted for marking.

Scope of Work

In this individual Assessment Task, you are to prepare your Final Thesis Report. You need to summarise all knowledge and results you obtained during the term about your nominated topic. You also need to develop your research methodology for achieving the research objectives. The outcomes and the results of your research on the nominated topic and its link/application/implementation in Western Sydney Airport must be extensively explained. To develop, configure, and write this Assessment Task, you need to have several discussions and brainstorming with your demonstrator during the term.

Final Thesis Writing and Structure Requirements

In preparing your Final thesis on your nominated topic, you are advised that you are to prepare it to these requirements:

−    Fill out the cover page for Assessment Task 4 and use it as the first page of your Assessment Task 4. Each student must write their full name and zID in the cover page. The blank cover page is provided in Moodle.

−   The structure of the Final Thesis is to be compiled as follows:

•    Cover Page (1 page)

It will be provided to you.

•    Originality Statement (start from a new page) The wording will be provided to you.

•    Copyright Statement (start from a new page) The wording will be provided to you.

•    Abstract (start from a new page)

Abstract is the summary of the all tasks that you do during the term and the results and outcomes you obtained. Abstract must be one paragraph with the keywords list at the end. It needs to be brief and concise within 200 to 250 words.

•    Acknowledgements (start from a new page if you want to include it)

•    Abbreviations (start from a new page)

You define all the abbreviations you use in your Thesis in this section.

•    Table of Contents (start from a new page)

All headings and subheadings are to be written including their page numbers. Please note that you need to use numbering code (starting from 1. for Introduction section continuing to References and appendix sections) to make the tracking of headings and sections easier for the audience.

•     List of Figures (start from a new page)

All Figures captions to be compiled including their caption number.

•     List of Tables (start from a new page)

All Tables captions to be compiled including their caption number.

•     Introduction (start from a new page)

Main body of the Final Thesis starts from this section. Introduction must introduce the topic and show its significance. Here, it must be explained why this topic was selected and how it links to Western Sydney Airport. In this section, it must be briefly mentioned what is covered in the next sections of the Thesis Report. (Suggest about 300-400 words)

•     Literature Review

This section is the adjusted and extended content of Assessment Task 2. You need to include other material you have researched throughout the term. (Suggest about 1500- 1800 words)

•     Problem Statement and Research Objective

The identified problems during your research on the topic and your research objective are to be written. (Suggest about 200-300 words)

•     Research Methodology

In this section, you develop you methodology that how the research objectives can be achieved. You can develop a flowchart or diagram to show the sequencing of your methodology  steps.  You  may explain how data or relevant information can be collected, processed, and analysed, and what tools, software and techniques are required. This section is all based on your innovation and your contribution, and it can be challenging. You can use as many as headings and illustrations are needed to present your work clearly. (Suggest about 1500-1800 words)

•    Outcomes and Discussion

In this section, you extensively focus on the results and outcomes achieved by implementing the research methodology. You may need to use different illustrations to present your outcome. Please remember that always interpretation on the illustrations is needed. The  Implementation/Application/Case Study of the developed research methodology and its  outcomes in the Western Sydney Airport is needed to be developed. (Suggest about 1200-1500 words)

•    Conclusion

This is the last section of the main body of the Thesis report. Here you will provide a concise summary of the tasks have been done plus a brief summary of the outcomes of your research and its application and link to the Western Sydney Airport. (Suggest about 300-400 words)

•     References

To Harvard Referencing Standard

•    Appendices (if needed)

(No word or page limit on any appendix)

−   Your Final Thesis Report is to be drafted in the following format: Headings: 14-point Arial font bolded.

Text: 12-point Arial font, 1.5 line spacing, page numbered, 20 mm margins at top and bottom, and 30 mm side margins. Your writing should be left and right margin justified.

−   The length of the Final Thesis Report needs to be minimum 5000 words for the main body of the Thesis Report. Main body of the Thesis Report starts from  Introduction section and finishes to Conclusion section. The other sections of the Final Thesis are not the main body and do not count in the word count. Abstract is not the main body part of the Final Thesis Report and does not count in the word count. The illustrations (such as table, chart, figure, etc.) in the main body section of the Final Thesis Report do not count in the word count.

−    Page numbering is required in the footers. Nothing else must be written in headers or footers.

−    Proofreading is required for spelling and grammar checking. English writing must be at the expected academic standard.

−   The Final Thesis Report is to be written in the third person.

−   You are permitted to use different types of illustrations in the body of your Final Thesis Report: including pictures, figures, tables, graphs, and charts. They need to be captioned using 10 - point Arial font and sequentially numbered:

e.g. (Figure 1: [caption]; Figure 2: [caption]; Table 1: [caption]; Table 2: [caption], etc.) Caption of a figures is its below, and caption of a table is its above.

−    Each illustration needs to be cited in your Final Thesis Report to link it to the writing content.

−   This submission will be subject to a Turnitin review.

−    In preparing your Final Thesis, you need to provide references and in-text citation to those sources. Referencing is to be to Harvard Standard. For this work, it is expected that you will use a minimum of 15 reference sources which have been published over the last 10 years. Wikipedia is not acceptable as a source. All references need to be cited throughout your writings according to Harvard Standard practice, and a full list of your used references (Author- Surname alphabetically sorted) must be provided at the end of your Final Thesis Report under

−    It is expected that your individual submission will be at professional standard with regards its:  written  content,  set-out,  spacing,  headings,  paragraphing,  sentence  structure  and spelling, the inclusion of any charts, diagrams, maps or pictures (and their labelling), in-text referencing (to Harvard Standard) and referral to any appendix material.

Marking Criteria

1.  Abstract: 5 marks

2.   Literature review, problem statement and research objective:8 marks

3.   Research methodology, results, and outcomes: 25 marks

4.   Introduction and Conclusions: 4 marks

5.   Final Thesis Report format and structure, written English, grammar, layout, referencing and in- text citation: 8 marks

Submission Requirements

Prepare your Final Thesis in Microsoft Word and on completion convert it to a PDF file which will be the file you will submit. Your PDF file is to be named accordingly:
