Canvas:

This class uses the UC Davis Canvas system deep linked to Wiley Plus to provide the learning materials, web discussions, and homework. The only way to access the Wiley Plus materials (eTexbook, homework, etc.) is through Canvas – you can’t access them through the Wiley Plus website.

Wiley Plus:

Steps to Initially Access Wiley Plus

1.   Once inside the Canvas course, simply click on an assignment and you will be directed to Wiley Plus.

2. If you already have a Wiley Plus account (say from your enrollment in another course), enter the email address you use to log in to your Wiley Plus account and the associated password. Once you successfully log in to your account, you will be able to access my course. Skip to step 4.

3. If you  do not have a Wiley Plus account, you must create a Wiley Plus account and  an associated password. Once you create your account and successfully log in, you will be able to access my course.

4.   Wiley Plus  allows you a  14-day  grace period to purchase the Access Code which means you can complete assignments right away until you purchase the Access Code which comes with the textbook purchase. You MUST purchase the 18th edition and the Access Code MUST be NEW, not used.

Course Format:

Prior to attending class, to gain a foundation of knowledge, you are expected to read the relevant textbook chapter outlined in the course calendar located on the last two pages of this syllabus.

After completing the textbook reading you will possess  enough  knowledge  of the  concepts  to actively participate in classroom activities. During class, I will lead a guided process to solve select end-of-chapter exercises and problems which I refer to as cases. I will provide you with a handout which contains the case facts and instructions (reproductions of the end-of-chapter exercises and problems). Students will often be asked to work individually and/or in groups to solve parts of the cases. You won’t “turn anything in”, but you will maximize your comprehension of the concepts, and their execution, through doing the work along with me! The course calendar outlines the specific exercises and problems that will be executed each day. If you miss class, I will post the case instructions and solutions on Canvas within 24 hours after each class. The posted solutions will not be nearly as valuable to your learning as working the cases with me in class.

Upon completion of the classwork associated with the assigned chapter, you will complete the assessment work outlined on the next page.

Assessments:

Optional, Ungraded Homework (Administered in Canvas) – 0 points OR 0% of Course Grade

If you wish, complete some/all of the OPTIONAL, UNGRADED homework for each chapter. Optional homework, located in Canvas, allows up to 5 attempts to test your comprehension and proficiency  without  penalty  for  mistake.  Solutions  are  available  immediately.  The  optional homework for each chapter opens at the  same time the required homework for each  chapter is available and remains open until 8:00 PM on the last day of the quarter. No points or extra credit are assigned to optional homework.

Homework (Administered in Canvas) – 150 points OR 30% of Course Grade

In  Canvas, complete homework for  each chapter outlined in the course calendar.  Most homework assignments contain 5 problems. For each homework problem, you will be allowed 3 submission attempts. Assignments will be available at the beginning of the week that we begin the chapter (Mondays at 1:00 AM). Homework is due at 8:00 PM on the Sunday after we have finished  covering the  chapter in  class.  The  course  calendar  displays  the  due  dates  for  each homework assignment. Late assignments ARE NOT accepted - no exceptions. There are 8 homework assignments, each worth 25 points. I will only count the scores of your highest 6 homework assignments (thus dropping two assignments). Solutions are available immediately after the assignment closes for grading. It is your responsibility to review the solutions to discover your mistakes - I will not explain homework solutions (except during Zoom office hours, after the assignment  has   closed  for  grading  and  you  have  unsuccessfully   attempted  to   discover  your mistakes). Extensions and/or reassessments on homework will not be granted under any circumstances.

Quizzes (Administered in Canvas) – 60 points OR  12% of Course Grade

In Canvas, complete a quiz for each chapter outlined in the course calendar. Quizzes contain a total of 10 questions comprised of true/false and/or multiple-choice questions. Once you begin, you will have 30 minutes to complete the quiz. Quizzes will be available at the beginning of the week that we begin the chapter (Mondays at 1:00 AM). Quizzes are due at 8:00 PM on the Sunday after we have finished covering the chapter in class. The course calendar displays the due dates for each quiz. Late quiz submissions ARE NOT accepted - no exceptions. There are 8 quizzes, each worth 10 points. I will only count the scores of your highest 6 quizzes (thus dropping two quizzes). Solutions are available immediately after the quiz closes for grading. It is your responsibility  to review the  solutions  to  discover  your  mistakes  -  I  will  not  explain  quiz solutions (except during Zoom office hours, after the quiz has closed for grading and you have unsuccessfully  attempted  to   discover  your  mistakes).   Extensions   and/or  reassessments  on quizzes will not be granted under any circumstances.

Midterms (Administered in Class) – 2 exams @ 75 points =  150 points OR 30% of Course Grade

During the quarter, there will be 2 midterm exams, each worth 75 points or 15% of your overall course grade. The first midterm covers chapters 2-4, and the second midterm covers chapters 5-8. The  midterm  exams  will   consist  of  free-response  questions.   You  are  required  to  bring  a pencil/pen  AND  a  calculator  to  the  midterm  exams.  Nothing  else  is  allowed  to be  used, including but not limited to cell phones, tablets, textbooks, notes, etc.  See the course calendar located on the last two pages of this syllabus for the dates of each midterm. You must take your midterm exams with your class section. Midterm exams cant be made up, rescheduled, or reassessed for any reason. HOWEVER, if you miss a midterm, the points from the missed midterm exam will be added to the final exam, making the final exam worth more.

Final Exam (Administered in Class) – 140 points OR 28% of Course Grade

The final exam is a closed book, closed note, comprehensive exam, covering chapters 2-8. Like the midterm exams, the final exam will consist of free-response questions. You are required to bring a pencil/pen AND a calculator to the final exam. Nothing else is allowed to be used, including but not limited to cell phones, tablets, textbooks, notes, etc.  See the course calendar located on the last two pages of this syllabus for the date of the final exam. You must take your final exam with your class section. The final exam can’t be made up, rescheduled, or reassessed for any reason.
