Assignment Brief
Assessment: Exhibition Proposal Presentation 30% (Individual or Pair)
Overview
Devise a curatorial project for the Schaeffer Library exhibition space to enhance critical engagement of Asian art for all library visitors. You may choose any topic or major exhibition that has been covered in this course. Once decided, select at least 8-10 textual materials from the Schaeffer Library collection to be shown at one of the designated exhibition spaces. There is one downstairs, and three upstairs. You can decide and propose the display requirements based on the selected materials. The presentation (exhibition pitch) will take place on 28 April or 5 May 2025 at your designated exhibition area within the Library itself (see schedule on canvas). It must not be longer than 10 minutes.
Task (Details)
Give an 8-10 minute exhibition pitch (approx. word count 2300) on a proposed topic outlining the following:
[1] an exhibition title
[2] the curatorial rationale and key theme(s)
[3] exhibition background and subtheme(s)
[4] overview of works (list and also indicate which image/event/artist you will be displaying – where relevant)
[5] brief sketch visualizing the display stating clearly the number and type of labels required
Format
. No Powerpoint slides required; presenters are allowed to bring along note cards for their pitch
. Presenters will need to have all the materials ready for the presentation; list of works must be given to the librarian at least one week in advance
. All group members must be involved in the presentation and have the opportunity to speak
. Organise your presentation such that there is a clear structure (Introduction/Body/Conclusion)
. Ensure that the entire presentation does not exceed 10 minutes; after that there will be a brief discussion (3 mins)
Deliverables
. Two-page write-up (double-spaced) summarising points [1]-[4]
. A separate appendix visualizing the display [5] including the number and type of labels
. Total three pages to be printed and submitted to your tutor before the presentation; your tutor may take photos of the presentation and incorporate them with feedback to the presenters
