42722 Additive Manufacturing for Medical Innovation
Assignment Task 1: Designing a patient-specific medical device
Part A: Creating a 3D Model of a Patient’s Jawbone from CT Scan Images (3 marks)
Follow the tutorial video provided on Page 21 of the Week 2 teaching material (file: “42722 - Week 2 - Designing patient-specific implants.pdf”), available under the Week 2 module on Canvas. This video will guide you through the process of reconstructing a 3D model of a jawbone from the provided patient CT scan data.
Submission Requirements:
- Include a screenshot of your final reconstructed model on Page 1 of your submission.
- Choose a clear and informative viewing angle that highlights the key anatomical features of the jawbone.
- Ensure the view is not too zoomed in or too zoomed out for optimal visibility.
- Your final model should resemble the one shown in the tutorial video.
- Minor deviations in geometry are acceptable, as long as the overall shape and anatomical accuracy are preserved.
Part B: Design a Patient-Specific Titanium Grafting Mesh Based on the Jawbone Model Created in Part A (3 marks)
Follow the tutorial video provided on Page 22 of the Week 2 teaching material (file: “42722 - Week 2 - Designing patient-specific implants.pdf”), available under the Week 2 module on Canvas. This video will guide you through the process of designing a patient-specific titanium grafting mesh based on the jawbone model created in Part A.
Submission Requirements:
- Include a screenshot of your final titanium grafting mesh on Page 2 of your submission.
- Choose a clear and informative viewing angle that highlights the key anatomical features of the grafting mesh.
- Ensure the view is not too zoomed in or too zoomed out for optimal visibility.
- Your final grafting mesh model should resemble the one shown in the tutorial video.
- Minor deviations in geometry are acceptable, provided the overall shape and key design features are preserved.
Part C: Written Responses (4 marks)
Question C.1: In fewer than 200 words, concisely explain the four key tools you used in the Segment Editor module in 3D Slicer to create the final geometry of the jawbone. Please ensure to describe them in the order you used them (2 marks).
Question C.2: In no more than 200 words, reflect on your activities in this assessment. Describe how the skills you developed in reconstructing anatomical models from medical images and designing patient-specific medical devices could be applied in your future professional practice. (2 marks).
