STATISTICALANALYSIS FOR COMMUNICATION
This course provides an introduction to basic statistical concepts and applications used in the social sciences in order to expose students to statistical applications for advanced coursework in Communication and the other social science majors. By the end of the course, you will be able to read and understand reports of quantitative research in academic journals and news stories, criticize statistical procedures used in research, conduct statistical tests using a data analysis program (SPSS), and interpret the results of many common statistical analyses. Click here for a list of specific topics covered.
Although this course will involve some computations, it places a heavier emphasis on understanding the concepts rather than mathematical computations. Your goal should be in understanding the concepts we cover so you can apply them in new scenarios, rather than just memorizing procedures or formulas without understanding their purpose and meaning. The reading for this class is not extensive, but you should read for understanding, not just to complete it. That means you may have to re-read whole or parts of the assigned readings more than once to understand the material.
