Assignment problems/tasks
1. (5 points) Suppose that the fuel efficiency E (in km/L) of a certain car can be modeled by
where v is the velocity (in km/h) and T is the outside temperature (in °C).
Suppose the temperature is constant. Use a derivative to illustrate how fuel efficiency changes if velocity changes. (Which derivative do you need to find?)
Then evaluate your derivative if v = 90 km/h and T = 20°C and explain what the sign of this derivative means in the context of this question.
2. (5 points) This is not a typical math assignment question. In this question you will read about a mathematician, and write your thoughts about their personal story.
Step 1: Read about a few mathematicians using one or both of these two resources:
● Living Proof: Studies of Resilience along the Mathematical Journey
● Voices in Mathematics: A Collection of Diverse Mathematical Journeys
Step 2: Choose ONE person that you find interesting in some way.
(a) What mathematician's entry did you choose, and what stood out to you about their story?
(b) What challenge(s) did they face? Do you find yourself relating to their struggle?
(c) What did they do to overcome their challenge? Is there anything you can learn about yourself or that inspires you from their story?
Answer one paragraph (3-5 sentences) each. Please type your answer to this (rather than write it by hand).
