Assignment Overview
This assignment requires you to produce a 4,000-word thematic discussion and reflection on key issues relating to International Construction and Design that you have explored during this semester. You will select FOUR topics taught by different lecturers. TWO construction-based and TWO design-based. Organise your reflections around TWO overarching themes that connect and contrast these topics.
This format encourages you to think critically across disciplines, compare international practices, and reflect on how your learning applies to your personal context and future career.
Assessment Task
Topic Selection
• Choose FOUR topics taught by different lecturers:
• TWO construction-based
• TWO design-based
• Topics should reflect areas of personal interest, relevance to prior learning, or alignment with your career goals.
Theme Selection
• Identify TWO overarching themes that connect your selected topics. Examples include:
• Sustainability
• Innovation
• Digital Transformation
• Health and Safety
• Risk Management
Each theme should link one construction topic and one design topic, allowing for comparative reflection and synthesis.
Structure of Submission
Your report should follow a clear academic format:
1. Table of Contents
2. Introduction (400 words)
• Brief overview of the four selected topics
• Rationale for topic selection
• Introduction of the two chosen themes and why they are relevant
3. Thematic Analysis (2 sections, approximately 1,600 words each)
Each section should:
• Define and contextualise the theme
• Discuss how the selected construction and design topics relate to the theme
• Reflect on what you learned, how you learned it, and how it differs from practice in your country
• Explain how you intend to apply this knowledge in future academic or professional contexts
• Include relevant illustrations (annotated sketches or diagrams)
• Support your analysis with references from independent research
4. Conclusion (400 words)
• Summarise key insights from both themes
• Reflect on how the assignment has shaped your understanding of international construction and design
• Identify areas for further exploration or development
5. References
• Use a consistent academic referencing style. (Solent Harvard Referencing)
• Include a minimum of 8 academic sources
