Module Learning Outcomes:
This assignment is designed to assess the following module learning outcomes. Your submission will be marked using the Grading Criteria given in the section below.
• LO 1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of central international trade theories explaining the patterns of trade and the empirical evidence relating to these theories
• LO 2. Apply partial and general equilibrium models to analyse international trade and evaluate the effects of trade and trade-related policies on welfare
• LO 3. Critically analyse how economic theory is used to formulate trade policy
• LO 4. Demonstrate an advanced, systematic knowledge and understanding of alternative reasons for using trade policy and the institutions governing trade
Assignment:
Students are required to complete one of the two options outlined below, and all submissions must include a short reflection. The country/industry for your assignment will be randomly assigned from a pool provided by the lecturer.
Option 1: Research Report
Research and write an academic report on one trade policy of your assigned country. The policy may be industry- and/or product-specific. Your report should:
• Examine how the policy aligns with or deviates from trade theories.
• Assess the economic and social impacts of the policy.
Option 2: Policy Brief
Research and write a policy brief for the government of your assigned country, advising on trade policy decisions for a specific industry and/or product. Address the brief to the relevant ministry or trade authority. The brief should:
• Be informed by trade theories.
• Present at least two feasible policy options, assess the trade-offs, and provide a clear recommendation.
Reflection (for both options)
Include a short reflection (max 300 words) at the end of your submission, explaining how you approached the assignment, the sources you used, and any challenges faced.
