Class Work Portfolio
SOC 110
Autumn 2025
To access your participation in class, every student is required to create and submit a Class Work Portfolio containing:
1. At least 7 and no more than 10 completed in-class activities representing your best work in class
2. A grade justification explaining what participation grade you believe you deserve based on your in-class work
The first step in creating your Portfolio is to choose 7 to 10 in-class activities for inclusion. You may use in-class activities from both lecture and quiz section. An in-class activity is anything Professor Kichler or the TAs asked you to do while in-class (e.g.- a Think/Pair/Share).
Your goal is to choose in-class activities that represent your best work in the class. “Best work” is highly subjective and personal. For instance, if this class is outside your usual area of study, maybe your best work is work connecting what you learned in class to your major. Or, maybe your best work is work where you thoroughly explored connections between your own experiences and what you learned in our class (i.e.- demonstrated sociological imagination). Or, maybe your best work is the work you did in a small group because you find working in groups challenging. Or, maybe your best work is the work you did where you confronted a past bias. Or, maybe your best work is defined by something else.
To start the Class Work Portfolio, begin by reviewing all the in-class activities you have completed. As you review these, consider which in-class activities you are most proud of. The in-class activities you are most proud of should be included in the Portfolio.
Once you have chosen the activities, you will need to write a grade justification explaining what grade you believe you earned for in-class participation. There is no minimum or maximum length for the grade justification. When writing the grade justification, you must use reference the grade expectations below to justify your grade. For example, if you believe you deserve an A+, your justification must discuss how the activities you chose show your growth as a student across the quarter.
The Class Work Portfolio is worth 20% of your final grade. If I agree with your grade justification, you will earn the grade you assigned yourself. If I do not agree with your grade justification, I will assign you a grade based on the expectations outlined below. Please note, the lowest possible grade on this assignment is a C (74%). Your Class Work Portfolio is due Monday December 1th by 11:59 pm.
You will submit the Portfolio as a single Word doc or PDF. Please arrange the Portfolio so that all in-class activities are together, followed by the grade justification. Please use a readable, 12-point font and double space for your statement. If you typed your in-class activities, you can simply copy/paste them into the Portfolio. If you handwrote your in-class activities, it is acceptable to include scans of your written work so long as it is readable. For some in-class activities, like a PollEverywhere or whole class discussion, you may need to write-up a summary of the activity (instead of submitting already completed writing)
