Alternative Assessment – 40% (Individual)
Assignment: Exploring Fundamental Concepts in Linguistics (40%)
Objective: The final assessment aims to provide students with a foundational grasp of key linguistic concepts, enhancing the ability to analyse and appreciate the fundamental structures of language.
Instructions:
1. Morphological Process (10%)
· Define morphological processes such as derivation and inflection.
· Provide examples to illustrate how these processes create new words or modify existing ones in different languages.
2. Syntactic structures (10%)
· Discuss the concept of syntactic structures and their role in sentence formation. How do word order, sentence structure, and syntactic features contribute to the interpretation of meaning in linguistic expressions?
3. Semantics (10%)
· Analyse the role of lexical semantics in capturing the nuances of meaning. How do words acquire multiple senses, and what factors contribute to the polysemy and homonymy observed in natural languages?
Submission Guidelines:
· The assignment should be typed and submitted as a document (Word or PDF).
· Clearly present your findings using appropriate headings and subheadings.
· Include examples and references to the course notes to support your analysis.
· The assignment should be submitted by the specified deadline.

o Citation style. APA (7th edition)
o Word limit: 2,500 – 3,000 words

· The assignment is due on 30th April 2024 (5pm). Unless a request for extension is made and approved, late submissions will be subjected to a 5-mark deduction per day.
· Please upload your assignment as a Microsoft Word document on Blackboard with your name and student ID clearly indicated in both the file name and at the top of the document itself.
· Please name your file in the following format: “A1_NAME_STUDENT ID_MAJOR”.
