Individual Assignment (Weightage: 30%)

Read the instructions in your course documents, in your student portal, Course Outline, CA outline and your Canvas portal carefully. You will be penalised with marks deduction if the instructions are not strictly followed. If you have queries read the Canvas FAQ and then email queries via your student portal.

Students are to upload their assignment by the due date to through their student portal account. After the due date, students’ submissions will not be entertained.

Students should a keep a copy of assignment submitted. All workings must be shown. The submitted report must show evidence that this is students’ own work.

Google offers Google Docs as a free online editor with a tool for entering Mathematic symbols. Your completed document can be downloaded and saved as a word document.

Write your Full Name and EMPID as in the register on the answer script.

Please be reminded that plagiarism and collusion is a serious offence, and all cases will be referred to the administration. Grades will be withheld if the submission is suspected for plagiarism or collusion till investigations are completed.

This assignment is assessed in TWO (2) sections:

Section A: Answer 3 questions (85 marks)

Section B: The presentation of the report (15 marks)

Section A (85 marks)

Answer the following THREE (3) questions and submit only ONE (1) MS Word report to Canvas.

(If you have used other software (eg. MS Excel) to generate the answers, copy and paste them onto theMS Word report. Your instructor will only mark theMS Word report.)

Question 1

Search online for an established Third-Party Logistics (3PL) service provider operating in Singapore OR in your home country.

Provide responses to the following:

(a) The name, location, size and facilities of the 3PL firm.                            (5 marks)

(b) Screenshots showcasing the firm and its business operations. Provide brief description for each picture.       (5 marks)

(c) Describe THREE (3) main services offered by the firm.

Question 2

Identify an existing Manufacturing OR Warehousing firm located in your home country or another Asian country.

(a) Outline THREE (3) major factors that influenced the firm’s location decisions.

Question 3

Company DIB observes the demand for product X over 10 periods as follows:

Assume the initial forecast is 200 units. Requirements:

a)   Plot a line chart* covering 10 periods, including the following FOUR (4) lines:

1.   The actual demand line                                                                (2 marks)

2.   The exponential smoothing forecast line with alpha = 0.1                 (4 marks)

3.   The exponential smoothing forecast line with alpha = 0.5                 (4 marks)

4.   The exponential smoothing forecast line with alpha = 0.9                 (4 marks)

*Suggestion: Use MS Excel to create the line chart.

b)  Calculate the Mean Squared Error (MSE) values for periods 1 to  10.   Present the squared errors and MSE values in a table.     (10 marks)

c)   Determine which smoothing constant produces the most accurate forecast? Discuss your observations.      (6 marks)
