Discussion 3: Volcanoes and Hot Spots
Fill in the chart below using your notes and your knowledge of plate tectonics and volcano types.
For many, you will need to rank themona scale of low, intermediate, or high based on a comparison with the other rock types.

Draw a profile of a plate boundary that would result in 1) basalt and 2) rhyolite. Use the empty diagrams below. Label each boundary type and the type of mountain/volcano would result from this boundary.

Yellowstone National Park was the first national park in the world and is known for its abundant wildlife and stunning geothermal features. The park is expansive and also happens to sit on top of one of the largest “supervolanoes” in the world. Draw anarrow that shows the direction of plate movement based on the hotspot track.
What do you think some of the global consequences of a Yellowstone eruption might be? Think of short and long-term consequences.
Below is a diagram of a new hotspot volcano that has formed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean (the hotspot is immediately under the volcano (shown by the triangle). In the empty diagram on the right, draw what the island chain will look like in 5 million years, assuming a new volcano forms approximately once every 1 million years. Circle the oldest volcano in the chain.
Below is a birds-eye view of amid ocean ridge off the coast of Australia. A hotspot resides underneath the volcano in the image. Draw the island chain as it might appear in a few million years time. Circle the oldest.
