Coursework Title: Simulation in Talbot Heath Computers
Description:

The module Simulation will be assessed using a piece of coursework worth 100%. The coursework will include a report of the results stemming from simulating the scenario of Talbot Heath Computers. The objective is to develop and execute a Simul8 simulation model, perform experimental runs and make judgments on the results obtained.

The coursework will built upon the experience acquired during lectures and tutorials to design a simulation model and experiment using different scenarios to propose a solution. The examination tests the totality of the students' learning throughout the module. It assesses the students’ ability to define, use and analyse techniques and knowledge acquired during the module.

Module Learning Outcomes Assessed:

Demonstrate the ability to make an immediate contribution to a simulation consultancy unit and justify recommendations to an organisation based on a simulation analysis
Apply computer simulation methods and software to a diversity of problems, including manufacturing, services and healthcare
Explain the difference between deterministic and stochastic models; describe the principles and methods of sampling; describe the use of random numbers in sampling; explain the implications of sampling on the validity of simulation models; describe tactics to ensure validity of simulation models; distinguish between discrete and continuous simulation
Develop the skill to present complex analysis results to managers using a variety of formats.

Instructions and notes
1.Produce a written report of no more than 2500 words (not counting any title page, contents list, tables, diagrams, graphs or the lesson learnt individual section- but the word count must be shown); the report to include:
a)descriptions of the runs carried out,
b)your rationale for the selection and design of the runs used;
c)results and discussion
2.You can work in groups (Max 4) for the model development and analysis, but your report must be submitted individually. In this case, please state the candidate number of the people you worked with in the cover.
3.Any model development, model refinement, experimental set up, experimental analysis, results collation and conclusions can be carried out within your group or individually. If you decide to build a spreadsheet to help you in the analysis then this also must be attached.
4.Note that the focus of this work is on the experimentation. It is important that you develop a simple model quickly and focus on experimentation
5.Submit report to the undergraduate office with the Simul8 model files. You can upload a ZIP file including the Word/PDF document and ALL the experimentation files (Candidatenumber.zip).

Failure to submit assignment (report or model) on time: -10% per day
Recommendations:
Create a simple model!
Do not start using the software for at least a day! Use the time to assess the situation. Understand the complexity (or not!) of the problem and decide how to target your analysis. Your simple model should capture the behaviour of the system but this does not mean it should capture every single element of data provided below. Once you do start building the model, build it incrementally. Test the logic of your model frequently and only in the latter stages start putting in detail. Most of all build the model quickly and concentrate on the analysis.

The problem description provides you with a starting point for your analysis. However, there is probably insufficient data to assess whether your design is able to robustly meet the objectives. For example, there is little in the way of breakdown data. You can assume typical values of data (e.g. estimate the downtime of a normally reliable machine) or you can seek information from me. Either approach is acceptable and will not impinge on the marks. I will provide information via email on specific request.

Marks, deadlines, etc.
You must produce a report accompanied by your Simul8 model. The marks awarded for this coursework are based on both report and simul8 model (Note! it is the detail not the display that is of primary interest in the model and the analysis in the report).

Report format
Your report should document your analysis that demonstrates you can (or cannot!) meet the objectives.
Structure, presentation, etc. can be decided by you but must be clear and the results and recommendations section should be “industrially credible”!

Hints
Keep the model simple, think clearly about the results you require. Simplify where possible -Think about how long you should run the model for and how many runs you should do. Consider where to put random variation in.
