You will be provided with the following equations on the midterm exam:

• Poisson distribution

where k = 0, 1, . . . and λ > 0.

• Binomial distribution

where k = 0, 1, . . . , n and 0 ≤ p ≤ 1.

Interpretation: k is the number of heads in n independent coin flips, where p is the probability of a heads.

• Geometric distribution

where k = 0, 1, . . . and 0 ≤ p ≤ 1.

Interpretation: k is the number of tails before the first heads in a sequence of indepen-dent coin flips, where p is the probability of a heads.

• Exponential distribution

where x ≥ 0 and λ > 0.

• Gaussian distribution

x ∈ R, µ ∈ R, and σ2 > 0.

• Gamma distribution

where x > 0, λ > 0, and n is a positive integer.

Interpretation: x is the sum of n independent exponentially-distributed random vari-ables with parameter λ.
